Dorm room ideas for a space that feels like home

It’s officially college move-in month!

Hi Reader!

Whether you’re helping your own student prepare for campus or know someone who is, setting up a dorm room can feel like a strange combination of exciting, overwhelming—and a little emotional.

A dorm room may be small and temporary, but it will still be where your student studies, relaxes, makes new friends, and begins building an independent life. With a little planning, it can feel comfortable, organized, and personal from the very first night.

I’ve gathered some of my most helpful dorm room resources to make the process a little easier.

Start with the practical decisions - Maximizing a Small Space

Before filling the cart, read College Bound: What to Know Before Buying Dorm Room Essentials. It will help you think through the room, the roommate, and what your student will actually need.

Then use my Dorm Room Essentials Guide to cover the must-haves without forgetting those little things that make daily life easier.

Choose a style that feels like them - Designing Your New Home

Dorm rooms are often a blank box, but bedding, lighting, storage, and a few carefully chosen accessories can completely change how the space feels.

Explore these ideas together:

My best advice? Choose the bedding first. It will be the largest visual element in the room and can guide the colors, storage, lighting, and accessories that follow. Starting with one clear direction also makes it much easier to avoid buying a collection of cute things that don’t quite work together.

And remember: the goal isn’t to create a picture-perfect dorm room. It’s to create a place where your student can walk in at the end of a long day and feel a little more at home.

Happy move-in month!

With gratitude,

P.S. A fresh semester deserves a fresh notebook! Explore the Write It Down Society notebook collection to find a design that fits their personality.

Clean kids room hack

Hi friend, I had one of those little parenting moments recently that completely changed the way I think about organizing. For years, I thought the answer to a cleaner kids' room was more reminders. "Put your laundry in the hamper." "Pick up your backpack." "Hang up your clothes." There had to be a better way! What are these piles trying to tell me?
