Home Maintenance Tip - Do this before you turn the heat on

Hi friend, Fall officially arrives next week, and I have one very unexciting—but very useful—thing for you to do this weekend. Go check your furnace filter. Actually pull it out and look at it. If it's visibly dirty, replace it. If it still has life left, great—you've at least confirmed it rather than wondering. And while you have it out, here's a little trick that will make Future You very happy: Take a photo of the filter size with your phone. No more standing in the filter aisle trying to remember whether you needed 16x20x1 or 16x25x1. Ask me how I know. 😄 I also like to write the replacement date directly on the edge of the new filter before putting it in. It takes five seconds and eliminates the inevitable When did I change this? debate later. This is really what manageable home maintenance looks like. Not spending an entire Saturday "maintaining the house"! It's noticing one small thing, taking care of it, and creating a simple system that makes it easier next time. That's also the thinking behind my Home Maintenance Log Book. Filter sizes, replacement dates, service records and all those other details about your house get one permanent home—so they don't have to live in your head. And now I want to know: What's the home detail you can NEVER remember? Your furnace-filter size? The weird refrigerator water filter number? When the gutters were last cleaned?
